Choosing the right tennis racket is crucial when you start playing. A suitable racket makes learning easier, improves playing comfort, and helps develop good technical habits. But with so many options available, it can be difficult to know which racket is best for a beginner. This article guides you through the important criteria to consider to make the right choice.
Criteria to consider when choosing a tennis racket for beginners
1. Racket Weight
The weight of the racket is a key factor, especially for a beginner. A racket that is too heavy can be difficult to handle and can quickly tire your arm, while a racket that is too light may lack stability and control.
- Light racket (250-270g): Easy to handle, ideal for women as it allows for quicker swings without putting too much strain on the muscles.
- Medium-weight racket (270-285g): Offering a good balance between power and control, this type of racket is suitable for men who want to progress quickly.
In general, a racket of around 265g for women and 280g for men is a good starting point for beginners.
⚠️Warning, do not overestimate your level, having the right weight for your racket will allow you to learn the technical fundamentals more quickly and thus progress faster.
2. The Head Size
The head size (the stringbed area) influences the racket's power, control, and forgiveness. A larger head size makes hitting the ball easier, even when the ball isn’t perfectly centered.
- Recommended Head Size (645-690 cm²): A large head size is recommended for beginners, as it offers a larger hitting area (sweet spot), which helps generate more power with less effort and is more forgiving on off-center hits.
3. Racket Balance
A racket’s balance is defined by the distribution of its weight between the head and the handle. This directly influences maneuverability and power.
For beginners, it is recommended to opt for a beginner racket with a slightly head-heavy balance (> 32.5 cm) to make power generation easier. If, on the other hand, you want more maneuverability, then you should choose a head-light balance (< 32 cm).
4. The Grip Size
The grip size is often overlooked, but it is essential for ensuring good playing comfort and preventing injuries. A grip that is too large or too small can lead to long-term pain.
How to choose the right size?: Hold the racket in your hand and check that you can fit a finger between your fingers and the palm of your hand. This will give you an indication of the appropriate size.
5. Stiffness
This is one of the most important criteria! We recommend that you choose a stiffness rating below 65 RA. The lower the rating, the longer the contact time you will have with the ball (which is ideal for getting a better feel for your swing and therefore improving). However, be careful not to go to extremes, because the lower the stiffness, the less power you will have.

- Advantages: Excellent maneuverability and a good balance of power / control.
The key criterion for a beginner player is to learn the tennis strokes. For this, you will need a racket that is both maneuverable and forgiving to make forehands and backhands easier. Your racket should also be relatively flexible so you can get a good feel for the ball (which will allow you to get a good feel for your swing on every shot). These 3 criteria are essential and will ensure you make greater technical progress than you would with a racket outside the specifications mentioned above.
