What are bumpers and grommets?

A bumper and grommet set is the plastic strip and eyelets that line the frame and guide the strings through the drilled holes. They cushion the frame against impacts and stop the strings from rubbing directly on the racket. They are a wear part, not the strings themselves, and need replacing as part of routine maintenance.

When to replace them

Replace them if they are torn or deformed, if the holes develop sharp edges (a real cause of premature string breakage), or if the frame is left exposed. Clay-court and outdoor players wear them faster, so check them at every restring, roughly once a year for regular play.
