How to choose your tennis ball machine?

Acquiring a tennis ball machine is an excellent investment for progress. You can improve a weak point like your backhand or perfect your forehand, but also work on your volley, rhythm, game sequences, and your endurance. The balls sent to you consecutively are all identical and of the same quality, allowing you to focus on a specific shot or movement. For coaches, it allows more time to be given to players to correct their technique. We therefore suggest reviewing the main selection criteria to consider to find the model best suited to your needs.

Selection criteria

The speed

The maximum speed of balls sent by a ball machine and the ability to adjust this speed are important factors to consider in your choice. On average, ball machines offer a speed between 16 and 140 km/h. Below 90 km/h, the ball will be rather slow to give you time to position yourself and hit the ball. Above 110km/h, the speed starts to be interesting for competitive players.

The ejection interval

This criterion will help to establish rhythm. Very often, higher-ranked players have more consistency and more power. They deprive you of time, so you don't have the rhythm to compete, because you rarely play against players much better ranked than you. The idea here is to shorten the ejection interval in order to hit more forehands and backhands in a shorter time, to position yourself and technically organize yourself so you are no longer bothered. With a tennis ball machine, you can establish a significant pace and this will also work on your physical condition.

The direction

Pay attention to the different directions in which your chosen ball machine can send balls: to the backhand or forehand side, and in a fixed or random manner.

The effects

Some machines allow you to apply slice or topspin. This option is interesting if, for example, you have difficulty returning your opponents' sliced backhands.

Game sequence programming

Being able to program game sequences on your ball machine will allow you to  vary the different zones, for example by starting with two balls on the forehand side, then a short ball, then a smash, etc.

Power supply

Most ball machines have a  lithium battery, which allows for a slower discharge, a longer lifespan, and faster recharging than older lead-acid batteries. Lead-acid batteries also require recharging every 2 months if you don't use your ball machine.

The remote control

A remote control that allows you to operate your machine remotely will certainly be essential so that you don't have to move to the other end of the court every time.

Ball capacity

Also pay attention to the number of balls your ball machine can hold: the larger its capacity, the longer you can conduct training sessions before refilling it. The Slinger Bag, for example, allows you to place up to 144 balls.

What tennis ball machine model to choose?

I want to improve my technique

If you are looking for a ball machine to perfect a shot or practice drills, you don't need a launcher providing high speed and many options. The Slinger Bag has an ejection speed between 16 and 73 km/h and could notably suit your needs: it is possible to add spin and set the ejection to random mode to receive balls from left to right. Its price is very affordable compared to other ball launchers on the market.

What type of ball to choose for your ball machine

You will have the choice between many models of tennis balls: pressurized or pressureless to feed your machine. You will get more comfort and playing pleasure with pressurized balls, but a shorter lifespan because the launching wheels compress the ball at the moment of ejection. To improve the lifespan of the balls, we therefore recommend pressureless balls which will have the same lifespan as if they were hit by an opponent. If you still wish to use pressurized balls to maintain good playing sensations, Head Tour balls offer very good wear resistance.

Please note, junior balls made of foam, orange, red or green cannot be inserted into a tennis ball machine because they are too soft to be ejected.

How to maintain my ball machine?

  • Store your machine in a dry place and avoid excessive temperature differences and humid places;
  • Regularly clean the launching wheels with a dry cloth: these can sometimes have felt embedded in them, and removing it will allow for optimal use of your ball machine.

Previously, it was important, especially during winter when you were not using the tennis ball machine, to fully recharge the battery at least once every two months. Now, thanks to our selection of ball machines with lithium batteries, you are no longer required to perform this operation.
