The Head Synthetic Gut PPS is a synthetic gut built around a solid polyamide core, wrapped in fibres and protected by a pearlised coating. A balanced string, aiming for control without giving up power or comfort. Offered here as a 200 metre reel, roughly fifteen string jobs depending on the racket, it is aimed at stringers, clubs and players who restring often.

Who is this string for?

The club player after a safe bet who does not want the dry feel of a polyester. The two available gauges, 1.30 and 1.35 mm, are deliberately thick: that is a durability choice. If you break strings regularly, the 1.35 will last longer; the 1.30 keeps a little more feel. Let us be clear though: this is not a pure topspin player's string, it does not bite the ball the way a shaped monofilament does. It more than makes up for it in comfort on the arm.

The technology explained

• PowerStrip: this is the PPS in the name, a polyphenylene sulphide strip built into the string. It increases resilience and elasticity, and so the energy returned at contact.
• Solid polyamide core: this construction holds tension over time better than a full multifilament, while staying markedly softer than a polyester.
• Pearlised polyamide coating: it limits notching and burning at the crosses, where most synthetic guts wear out first.
• 1.30 and 1.35 mm gauges: two durability-oriented thicknesses, suited to players who break strings.
• Recommended tension of 22 to 25 kg: at the low end for power, at the high end to tighten up control.
• 200 metre reel: the cost per string job drops sharply against buying single sets.

This is the string we recommend to clubs and stringers looking for a safe bet to serve players of mixed levels. It will not work miracles on spin, but it delivers where many polyesters fall short: comfort and tolerance on the arm, particularly for senior players or anyone coming back from tendinitis. Its other strength is tension maintenance, better than a full multifilament thanks to the solid core. One often-forgotten option, and one Head explicitly recommends: run it in the crosses of a hybrid, with a polyester in the mains. You keep the poly's bite while regaining softness, and the 200 m reel makes it genuinely economical since each job uses only half the length.
